For this design competition we were invited to partner with Archi-tectonics, a New York City based design firm to realize exterior garden spaces for the Yulin Cultural Arts Centre in Yulin, Shaanxi, China.
The design criteria specified a mix of cultural features, including a museum, performing arts centre and an art block; retail, residential, office and hotel amenities. The concept was to create distinct buildings connected by exterior landscapes and gallerias. The idea of the Hutong, which are semi-public garden spaces with small shops, was used to integrate the housing into the scheme and offer sheltered places for the residents.
The plan created by POPOVICH features varied experiences relating to plants, water and earth influenced materials as well as seasonal interest and sustainable ecological practice.
