Build a lasting legacy by repurposing structures and places with the bold and innovative team at POPOVICH.
Inspired by the techniques for NDSM-Werf in Amsterdam, the approach to the interior form of SCHALTHAUS employed the concept of pairing compartmental blocks. An extensive range of businesses occupy the space, contributing to the culture and identity of Phoenix West and SCHALTHAUS. The built-form for Phoenix West and Fourth Wave integrated the historical elements of the former steel mill with the contrasting nature of this contemporary redevelopment.
Montreal-Nord resides on the banks of the Prairies River on the Island of Montreal. The site is situated under the Pie-IX Bridge, a concealed and neglected space.
This intervention was a first step towards building a lasting legacy that changes, adapts, and is easily modified to meet present and future community needs and priorities. Incorporating the use of simple and readily available materials that can be donated, reused, recycled, and installed with unskilled community labour minimizes initial costs while engaging the community.
The modular nature of interventions provides flexible programming and adaptability for diverse uses, such as social gatherings, urban agriculture, performing arts stage, and an art gallery.
Our vision saw the three silos forming a partnership between economy, ecology, and culture, unifying the surrounding urban community with nature, technology, and marketplace. Using our concept vision, pragmatic knowledge, and strategic innovation partners, we ensured the three silos returned to a functional balance with their environments.
By protecting and preserving the three silos in their original placements, their heritage was preserved, and character and identity were given to the new neighbourhood: the Sportheldenbuurt. The repurposing of these histories also creates a beacon in laying an economic basis for the development of Zeeburg, attracting new residents and visitors while establishing Zeeburg as an Urban Centre Core.
